St Judes Hall
WOS is extremely fortunate to have its own premises, St Jude's hall. The Society purchased St Jude's Hall in 1978, with many members both past and present, raising funds for its purchase. Considerable refurbishment took place over the following years to make St Jude's what it is today. St Jude's is where we rehearse, hold regular meetings and is the home of the Caroline Barlow Dance School.
Our address is:St Judes Hall, St Judes Terrace, Weston-super-Mare,
St Judes Hall is occasionally available for hire to other local groups - please see
St Judes Hall Bookings.
History of WOS
Founded in 1908 with its first production, The Pirates of Penzance, performed in 1909, the society has gone from strength to strength. It has performed at least one show every year since, with the exception of the War Years 1914-1920 and 1940-1947.
We now stage two full productions a year – usually April and October at the Playhouse Theatre in Weston super mare, which is conveniently situated in the centre of town with good parking facilities close by.
We also regularly stage a Summer and a Christmas event in our own beloved premises of St Jude's.
Our Youth Group The Oppitts ranging from 8 -16 years have performed a number of productions including Cats, Bugsy Malone, Fame Jr and Elf Jr to name but a few. And many of the children have appeared in our main adult productions at the The Playhouse Theatre, featuring prominently in shows such as Oliver, The Sound of Music and The King and I, not to mention our huge 2017 success Half a Sixpence.
The roots of the Society lie deep in Weston super Mare and the local surrounding area. Some families have been members for a long time, many have newly arrived; all have enjoyed the opportunity to perform before the footlights. A few who started with us in their youth have flourished into national stars on stage, film and television.
Charitable Status
Weston super Mare Operatic Society is a registered charity. The Charity Registration Number is 266217.
WOS is entirely self-funding and its financial support is obtained mainly from theatre ticket sales, as well as receiving generous contributions from its patrons, whom we like to call Friends. New Patrons/Friends are always welcome. Please contact our business manager on 07719 624100 for details. The society also helps to raise funds for other charitable organisations, with many thousands of pounds donated to local worthy causes over the years.
